Catch the Last Two Magical Nights of the Hit Broadway Musical WICKED At The CCP Main Theater!

Amazing. Superb. Magnificent. These words are not even enough to fully encapsulate the depth, humor, music and magic surrounding the most successful Broadway production since The Phantom of the Opera.

The Broadway Musical WICKED in Manila Ends tomorrow, March 9, 2014

If I failed to watch WICKED, then all these inferences, let alone Time Magazine's raves wouldn't have meant so much to me.

"If every musical had the brain, the heart and the courage of WICKED,
Broadway really would be a magical place." -Time Magazine

A Glimpse of the Magical Stage of WICKED before the show

But after watching the show, I can't help but concur. The retelling of the L. Frank Baum classic, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, is a visual feast of the highest calibre! It doesn't only make you laugh, sing, stomp your feet to Stephen Schwartz's gorgeous music, but more so, its heartwarming message gets you all choked up and makes you want to cry.

Even though the scenes are set in a magical place, so unlike ours, the characters are all so relatable. I felt a strong sense of shame when G(a)linda and the other students first mocked Elphaba (Elphie)because of the color of her skin. I can't help but remember similar prejudices I've had just because someone looked, talked or acted differently. :(

The shocking twist involving the Wizard's real identity and his devious plan to manipulate Glinda and Elphaba  had me at the edge of my seat! The spellbinding scenes afterwards further cemented my belief that not everything we hear, see and learn about one another is true. Just because a certain someone looks and acts kind doesn't always reflect his or her true character. In reverse, just because somebody's personality is not that appealing doesn't make him or her naturally bad.

The unlikely friendship formed between Glinda and Elphaba  manifested in several heartwarming moments, witty repartee and show-stopping numbers, provides the heart and soul of WICKED.

Elphie's passion to help the animals speak again, her love affair with Fiyero, the future scarecrow and her final acceptance of being an outcast to the point of being proclaimed dead, is beyond heartbreaking. What stopped me from truly losing it is simply the wonderful fusion of music and lyrics, stunning production numbers including my personal faves, Defying Gravity and Dancing Through Life, set in breathtaking stage designs.

The central message of the show, I think, is that no matter how much harm and injustice we've received in life, we still have a choice to create our own happy ending. For Glinda, it is public adulation- but with a price. And for Elphie, it's sacrificing herself so that her dream of making a difference in the lives of her fellow Ozians will still come true.

As Elphaba said in the end of the musical:

"It well may be
That we will never meet again
In this lifetime
So let me say before we part
So much of me
Is made of what I learned from you
You'll be with me
Like a handprint on my heart
And now whatever way our stories end
I know you have re-written mine
By being my friend...
Like a ship blown from its mooring
By a wind off the sea
Like a seed dropped by a skybird
In a distant wood
Who can say if I've been changed for the better?
But because I knew you
I have been changed for good.”
-For Good (Wicked)

Kudos to the Australian Cast for a job well done!

We've definitely been changed for good! :)
