A Tale of Two Michaels: Jackson and Phelps Reveal Secrets of Greatness In A Simple Auctioned Armoire and A Swimming Cap

One was the undisputed King of Pop who revolutionized the way music is perceived and performed today.

The other was the young teen champ who broke several world records in the 2004 Athens Olympics.

The Downside of Success

But when Jackson's personal doctor Dr. Conrad Murray was found guilty of manslaughter, rumors regarding the late singer's drug habits were further cemented.

Though less tragic than Jackson's fate, when Phelps was caught with a bong sniffing marijuana, the repercussions were equally devastating on his career and public image.

Michael # 1: Jackson

Despite the darkness that plagued him throughout his life, no one can deny that Jackson was indeed one of the few musical greats of our time.

Whoever thought that a simple armoire up for auction today can portray Michael Jackson's single-minded determination for a comeback just months before his death?

There's no doubt that these words: Train. Perfection...Full Out also guided the King of Pop in the inception of some of the most beautiful songs in pop music history.

Michael # 2: Phelps

Discovering Michael Phelps' secret as a a swimming great was certainly much easier than expected.

In a very interesting interview with The Observer, Phelps revealed that to keep him motivated to train for the 2004 Olympics in Athens, he wrote "Athens 2004" in the inside of his swimming cap.

When I heard about this years ago, I was so pumped up that I posted my favorite quotation on my mirror:
"Fame is a vapor.
Popularity an accident.
Riches take wings.
Only one thing remains.
And that's our character."

How about you, which quote are you most likely to post on the mirror to keep you motivated and inspired in your journey through life?
